YAY OR NAY: Is Madonna to old for THIS?

madonna-superbowl.jpgWe're all for growing old disgracefully here at Dollymix, but the recent pictures of a 53-year-old Madonna cavorting on stage at the Superbowl this weekend have caused even the most open-minded viewers to consider whether she is perhaps a little old for thigh-length boots and fishnet tights. Interlude entertainment at the event provided by the singer (who herself has a teenage daughter) included Egyptian-style dancing, upside-down poses and suggestive up-close moves with dancers of both sexes. So what do you make of all this?

'Dressing your age' is a guideline rather than a rule for most people, and up to a point  dressing 'old' can do more harm than good. A great many women I've known who have suddenly found the confidence to adopt a more youthful wardrobe have discovered to their surprise that not only can they pull off shorter skirts and bolder colours: they actaully look amazing in them too. But would you draw the line at a costume like the Madonna's get-up here?

53 is not old really, come one, she looks great, and she has more fitness actually than any other person  I know under 30. isnt it about time we kicked the stereoptype of grow old gracefully.
Madonna  looks good, does a great job, why should she suddenly give up and make  room for young sprogs, no way, you got it, do it, and she does have it, otherwise she  would not have been asked to do it, SIMPLE celebrate being a women at any age you damm please, and respect PEOPLE for being who they wish to be , WE ALL GET OLD VERY QUICKLY and Im sure none of us want to be  judged on the individuals we are. and lets face it Madonna has been a personal inspiration  to millions of women. I say rock on, and I hope she keeps going, we need people like Madge, that is the truth

  • I have to admit this didn't make me feel quite as sick as the Britney snog, but still...

Madonna needs to let the new kids have a go, she's had her time, why not grow old gracefully, put her bits away, and show some class.  She'd get a lot more credibility if she appeared to support newer acts rather than vice versa, she keeps chasing the zeitgeist and missing it, which looks sad and desperate!

  • I once read a quote from Madonna in the 'Hung Up' era where she said she thought she looked better naked than clothed, which is why she spends so much of her time in high hemlines, leotards and the like. And there's no denying that she has the body of a woman a third of her age and I don't think her boots and fishnets and so on look bad. A performer needs an OTT wardrobe.

But I think the majority of her best moments have been when she's done full-on glamour - the 1940s dresses she wore in her Evita period, and the Stella McCartney dress at the MET Gala etc. I'd love to see more moments like that.

  • Y'know what? She doesn't need to dress like an old person. Just with a little more dignity and class. We've seen her do ladylike before and she worked it. But this? She just looks slightly...desperate for attention.
