suri_cruise.jpgNobody tell Suri Cruise, but there's a new child diva on the scene. Actress Thandie Newton revealed to Vogue that if her daughter Nico wants to wear lipstick to school, it's fine with her. In fact, it's fantastic.

"I love it if my seven-year-old wants to wear red lipstick to school." She told them. "That's fantastic, it's her self-expression."

I'm fully expecting a load of papers to be all over this comment by tomorrow, just like they're all over Katie Holmes the minute they spot Suri wearing lipgloss, but is it that much of a deal? People might think it's sexualising children and forcing them to grow up too soon, but there is a difference between a little girl playing at being grown up with some lipstick now and again and having a three-inch layer of foundation, a spray tan and some fake boobs, all of which happen in the show about child pagents in the US, Toddlers and Tiaras (featuring Mackenzie, a terrifying four-year old with the voice of a chain smoker, definite rage issues and possible ADHD).

Thandie added, "[Make-up] is not about hiding from the world, it's about creating a stage for yourself wherever you go."

Maybe it's something to do with being a parent with dramatic tendencies - you don't see makeup as something for a special occasion, or something you start wearing when you want boys to like you better, you see it as a tool to express character. I'd probably see it that way too - but not to school. What do you guys think?
