If you're currently panicking about presents, Christmas lunch, family feuds or any other not-so-jolly aspects of the festive season you are certainly not alone. For every person who loves Christmas, there's another who secretly can't wait for it all to be over and to be back to normality in the relative safety of their workplace, or whatever is 'normality' to you!
Having heard it all from various friends and relatives in the past few weeks, I've come up with the following pieces of advice on how not to let the fear of Getting it Wrong spoil Christmas.
1. Don't worry about buying the flashiest gift
It's not all about the money. It really isn't! Keep telling yourself that until it goes in. Would you really think less of a friend or relative if they didn't spend a small fortune on you? Well neither should they.
2. Expect telly tantrums? iPlayer and catch-up are your friends. Is there going to be a massive argument about whether you're watching Ab Fab or your niece's favourite cartoon? Let technology be your saviour and plan to watch all the great festive TV at your leisure once time is your own again.
3. Take advantage of an enforced rest
You might not get into the swing of it right away, but the few days off over Christmas are a great way to pull yourself out of whatever may have been stressing you out at work without you even knowing it
4. Don't overdo the drink
By all means enjoy a mulled wine, G&T or three, but don't get so sozzled you say something unwise at the dinner table; it's easily done at this time of year. You'll also spend half of your break with a hangover, which is never relaxing!
5. Share the joy..
Those of us with a tendency towards stress often also have a perfectionistic streak. Try not to let this dictate your day, and especially if you're hosting, don't try to be superwoman. Rope in as many friends and family members possible to share the cooking and preparation chores, and don't let anyone take advantage of your goodwill!
