bbc-women-of-the-year.gifThe BBC has chosen its '12 faces' of the year for 2011 and in its 'women' category, one of the chosen heroines in the line-up looks to have completely over-done the smudgy eye makeup look. In fact, she's probably the only one not wearing any make-up at all, as she's actually a panda. Want to know why a non-human was included in this list of iconic women? Read on for a bit of info on each of them.

January: Gabrielle Giffords, 41. A US Congresswoman from Tuscon, Arizona, Giffords was working in her home town when a gunman shot her through the head, killing several of her colleagues. She was back in Congress by August following a difficult recovery.

February: Adele Adkins, 23. The singer-songwriter known as Adele had an instant number one hit in the UK after performing her debut single Someone Like You at the Brit Awards in February 2011.

March: Eman al-Obeidi, 29, cast dignity aside in order to alert the world to the horrors of the late Colonel Gaddafi's regime in Libya. Having been gang-raped and beaten by members of the former leader's militia, she burst into a hotel in Tripoli to tell the assembled foreign media of her ordeal, showing them her scars.

April: Pippa Middleton 27. Party planner Pippa Middleton whipped up a storm of (mostly male) admiration after acting as her sister Kate Middleton's Maid of Honour at the Royal Wedding. Her duties, coupled with her figure-hugging dress, let to nicknames like 'her Royal Hotness'..

May: Nafissatou Diallo, 32, the maid at the centre of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal who waived her right to anonymity to ensure her story was told. The Guinean has said she hopes 'God punishes' the disgraced former IMF boss.

June: Li Na, 29. Spirited tennis player Li Na became the first Chinese national to win a Grand Slam singles title. In the June 2011 French Open, she beat defending champion Francesca Schiavone.

July: Princess Charlene, 33. Born Charlene Whittstock to an 'ordinary family' in South Africa, the now-Princess of Monaco married Albert II of Monaco in July. The apparent fairy tale was not all roses, however, when it emerged that Charlene had almost walked on learning some undisclosed information on her husband-to-be's private life, probably relating to long-standing rumours of his alleged homosexuality.

August: Michele Bachmann, 55. Outspoken Christian and Tea Party darling Ms. Bachmann is a leading Republican party candidate for the 2012 presidential elections in the United States, currently set to stand against Barack Obama.

September: Dilma Rouseff, 64 The current Brazilian president became in 2011 the first woman to open a debate at the UN General Assembly. A the ceremomy, she trimphantly declared that the 21st Century would be "the Century of Women".

October: the Duchess of Alba, 85. One of Spain's leading eccentrics (and almost certainly one of the richest) the Duchess of Alba made the headlines in October when she married a civil servant 24 years her junior, taking steps to protect her $4bn fortune suggesting that the marriage was 'for love'.

November: Corporal Kelsey de Santis, 23. The US marine had a dream come true when her hero, singer Justin Timberlake, accepted her invatation via YouTube to come to her annual prom. She described Timberlake as 'a complete gentleman'.

December: Sweetie, 7. Sweetie the panda, along with her 'husband' Sunshine stole our hearts when she flew in from China to take up residence in Edinburgh zoo. Known in Chinese as Tian Tian, it is hoped she will soon have cubs. The pair are the first pair of pandas to live in Britain for more than 20 years.
