Today, we're reliably informed (thanks Twitter!) that it is National Cupcake Day, at least in some parts of the world. Now, working in a female-dominated office I can't help thinking that it's been cupcake day every day since about 2007, because since then, it's taken as read that this is what us girls want to eat. All the time! Apart from when we're dieting, of course. I'm quite partial to one myself - as long as it's not one of those bitterly disappointing ones that are all dry and hard in the middle, and the more artfully decorated it is, the better - but as far as I'm concerned they're just another cake. Let's not lose perspective here, sugar rush or otherwise!
So much has been written on the significance of the cupcake as a simple of female empowerment/subjugation that I won't bore you by sticking my oar in here. But my honest opinion is that if you like sugary cakes and are particularly taken by cutesy decor then knock yourself out and eat one (or three) whenever you fancy it. I really don't think we need to dedicate a day to that pursuit unless - of course - cupcakes just get a bit insecure at this time of year when they're in danger of being ousted by the mince pie.
Christmas cupcakes anyone?
