Are there double standards with TV sexism?

The news this week has been dominated with the inappropriate behaviour of Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys, who have been caught making sexist comments about women in the industry on several occasions.

But are women making the same mistake? And is it somehow more acceptable for women to make sexist jibes?

Watch Loose Women and you'll see a panel of women ripping into their ex-husbands, current boyfriends and men in general. Or what about that advert for an oven cleaner, featuring a clueless man and the tagline "So simple, even a man can do it." Surely that's as sexist as saying a woman shouldn't be a ref?

Giles Coren recently wrote an interesting piece for the Daily Mailwhere he suggested that the sacking of the two Sky Sports presenters might lead to further consequences in the sporting field.

Giles claims that men are constantly having to apologise for their sex. And I can see where he's coming from. There are certain jokes women are allowed to make about men, which would be shocking if men made them about women. I suspect this might be because women are seen as the more vulnerable sex.

But when was the last time you heard about a Loose Woman getting a tell off for mocking men?

So, is there a double standard when it comes to sexism? Is it more acceptable for women to make sexist remarks? Let us know in the comments.

Only an idiot would be sitting around during the day watching 'Loose Women' - do we really care what a bunch of mediocre women say at the end of their careers on lunch time TV? Would they actually have anything to say if they weren't rinsing out tired 70s stereotypes about men? They are obviously ridiculous and re-enforce their stupidity by their choice (and attitudes) towards their relationships.

And that can be said for footie tards. Have you not noticed that sexism is rife on the TV that mediocre people watch between looking after their kids and trooping off to Trumpton biscuit factory.

Don't complain about sexism, just throw out your TV.

  • It seems a funny show...

What really hacks me off is that violence when given by a female to a male is not only acceptable but laughable when on TV. Which idiot said its a mans world

Women cannot be allowed a free reign if men cannot make such comments.

We live in a society where men bashing is considered to be fine.

If you see ads on TV they are quite anti men. like the woman phones the travel agent and they show the man struggling. men are generally depicted as stupid but they are not.

There should be a more balanced view and it is time all sides reigned in.

I Completely agree with the sentiment. In addition to this how many men only clubs exist these days. Who is allowed to advertise for men only nights out/in in the workplace, I'm not, as thats descrimination...hmm Ann Summers parties, candle parties etc. The round table now has women... but they keep their WRI. Our Sporting bars/ men only clubs are now non existing... where do men go to be around other men without nagging women. Its a joke and its about time men grew a pair and spoke back.
