Spark, fireworks, magic, thunderbolts. Call it what you will, I need them. All of them if possible. In any relationship, I have to be hit in the face with something the completely takes me by surprise or I just don't think I'll ever feel it. I need that thing, that buzz that keeps me interested. There has to be...something. Doesn't there?
One of my best friends had a very slow burning relationship with someone they were friends with. My dad wasn't interested in my mum when they met. He's was actually trying to pull her best mate. I know a lot of people whose relationships work without the initial spark. Some don't even believe in the whole sparks and fireworks thing.
But I do. And I won't date a guy more than twice without it. The only reason I say twice is because sometimes I get annoyed with myself for not giving a guy a chance. So I give it another shot. And it never ends up going very well. If I don't have that spark to start with, I pretty much don't think I ever will.
Am I wrong? Am I missing out on stuff? I'm not saying people who are friends first can't have that spark, but even then I'd need something to change. Otherwise for me it's a bit too much like 'friends with benefits'. I need something, or someone to wow me. Nothing unrealistic, I haven't watched so many rom-coms that my brain has turned to mush. I don't want the grand gesture at the top of the Empire State building (we know how well that turned out for Deborah Kerr), but I do want something that makes me sit up and take notice. Something that makes me think "I want to invest time in this".
I can't go into a relationship thinking "maybe, we'll see". Because most of the time if I'm that indifferent, I'm not that bothered about things when they end either.
