Lying about lateness

One of my favourite things to read of a morning is Annie Mole's excellent London Transport blog - Going Underground.

I found her latest post particularly interesting, discussing the latest TfL survey in to commuter lateness to work. I was surprised to note (as was Annie) that despite some truly horrendous service on many lines in the morning rush, TfL cheekily conclude that out of the 1000 people interviewed for the survey "half of those who were late lied about the reasons why", most blaming public transport or bad traffic.

More after the jump:

I'm thankful that I very rarely have to travel on the tube during rush hour. Too few trains, too many people, no air conditioning, lots of line failures...getting to work unruffled is nigh on impossible in this town. And yet only 5% of the 20% who told their bosses the tube was to blame said that was the real reason?

Perhaps if a few more people had been interviewed the numbers would have told a different story. Annie makes the very salient point that the survey "probably wasn't carried out in the rush hour either" - see, even the interviewers don't fancy braving those tunnels!

What are your favourite excuses for turning up late? Do you favour honesty or prefer to fudge the truth? Would you rather blame Boris or take it on the chin? Let us know in the poll below!

Lying about lateness - Comments

  • I must confess one of my Bad Mummy traits is to blame lateness on The Daughter and/or The Cat. Invariably it can be attributed to them but only via my own disorganisation!
