Five reasons to love Lily Allen

Lily AllenLily Rose Beatrice Allen is back - not just in the tabloids, but on the music scene. She's put up with being stalked everywhere she goes by the paparazzi and slagged off in all the celeb rags, gone back in the studio and made great new tunes. To this I say a big hurrah and invite you to join me for my top five reasons to love her longtime.

1. Her new songs are brilliant - honest, cutting and catchy, and the video for "The Fear", with its dancing presents and general surrealness, reminds me of Veruca Salt's bratty solo in the original Willy Wonka film. Here it is after the jump:

2. She's real - so what if she's got a famous dad? Lily Allen made it acceptable for British girls to sing in their real accents instead of faking transatlantic drawls. No, we cannot blame her for Kate Nash.

3. She's a blogger - and she knows the importance of giving sneaky peeks to fans. Against the advice of her record company she uploaded tracks off "Alright, Still" to MySpace way before release and still managed to bag a number one with "Smile". She's also been blogging consistently since before we'd ever heard of her.

4. She's not bothered about being commercial - "Everyone's At It" has a go at the media, newest song "The Fear" features everyone's favourite f-word repeatedly and have you heard "Guess Who Batman"? Previewed on her MySpace page over the summer, in her own words "this song is not a direct attack at anyone , it was origianally written about the BNP in the uk but then i felt this issue has become relevant pretty much everywhere , we are the youth , we can make coolness for our future , its up to us . go green and hate hate".

5. She puts her money where her mouth is, recording at solar-powered Studio A, writing to politicians on energy issues and even meeting with Boris Johnson to discuss a benefit concert to aid victims of knife crime.

Lily Allen, I think you're just wonderful - roll on the second album!

Actually, I sort of like the fact she parties a lot and stuff. It gives her more of an edge.

I really enjoy her music, I didn't get into it until I heard "F---you" and then I started looking into her, and I found "It's not fair" and loved it!! and her new song "22" I absolutley adore it, I personally dont care what she does in her personal life, if she parties, and has fun sooo be it. Just hope she keeps making great songs :)

I find Lily Allen to be an incipid, contradictory troll with absolutely no redeeming features. She preaches an anti-fame message whilst indulging in all of the trappings of her wildly hyped up fame. At the end of the day. she is merely some boring, plain, distinctly average tabloid fodder who's whining mockney vocals held up by casio keyboard musak blot the otherwise beautiful landscape that is british music.

Lily. Your time is up. please go now. It's pathetic.

(p.s your blue Agent Provocateur stockings should not be pulled up so high that they cut into your derriere. Show some social decorum, dear.)

  • I thought this one might start a discussion! I'm not telling anyone to like Lily's music if they...well...don't like it, but I thoroughly encourage people not to judge someone's music by what's written about them in the tabloids. I'd like to think we don't look to websites or magazines to tell us whether it's ok to like someone or not, but unfortunately some people do.

Alex makes a good point about the different between a speaking voice and a singing voice, but some people have a 'telephone voice' and a normal speaking voice. When you sing you can be yourself totally, and for me that's what Lily does. The fact that she isn't trying to sound American pleases me greatly.

Thanks again for all the comments!

  • Alright, even though I'm not fond of her, I'll buy most of those reasons, but real accent? The 'real' posh accent she uses when she's presenting or the 'real' cockney voice she uses when she's singing? I don't care which one she is, but some honesty would be nice...!

Having just said all that whiny stuff, it is nice to read such an enthusiastic and positive post about anyone.
