Distillers gigs used to attract crowds packed with thousands of sweet Brody-Dalle-a-likes, and that was a darn good thing, because as role models go, she had bite. When they broke up in 2005, there weren't any gritty rock&roll icons willing to take her place. That's sad, but it no longer matters - after having a baby with every indie lady's crush of choice, Josh Homme, she's come back to music with new band Spinnerette. And she's still being brilliant.
"I didn't want to do a fucking monkey dance for people who don't care about art," she told NME, explaining why she was releasing it independently. "I want to be more art-focused and call the shots... I'm not interested in getting entangled into the system. I just got out of a deal and walked out with my record, and thank God, I'm really grateful for that."
Cor. You can't imagine Duffy talking like that, can you?
There's some actual music from Spinnerette on MySpace, where they have waggishly described themselves as "grime". They are not really grime. But they do sound excitable.
One last thing, readers. With this, Wendy and I have finished our two-week stint as your guest editors, and we've loved every minute of it. We'll continue to be blogging daily about all things musical and funny (if you haven't already read it, Roby's Polly Scattergood piece is one of my favourite reads all year, no exaggeration) over at The Lipster, so come see us some time. So farewell, DollyMixers, until next time, and enjoy your new editors.
