Woman of the Week

92 year old woman votes for Obama, from an ambulance

us-flag.jpgYou might think we'd go for Michelle Obama as Woman of the Week today, she being the first black First Lady, and all. But Betty Owen of San Antonio, Texas, pips her by a whisker.

Owen, a 92-year old Marine Corps veteran who served in World War II AND an ex-president of the League of Women Voters of Memphis, cast her first ballot in 1940. And despite being on a gurney, in an ambulance, in a car park, she wasn't about to let that stop her participating in the historic elections yesterday. Dressed in her Sunday finest, Owen, who can't walk since suffering a stroke four years ago, was taken from her retirement home to vote at the eleventh hour. Thinking she'd missed out on casting her ballot after failing to fill out an absentee form, her daughter found her voter registration card at the last minute. Which meant officials at the polling station were able to take an electronic voting machine on board the ambulance. But it gets better...

According to the San Antonio News, local Judge Sam Green was on board the ambulance, and told a grinning Owen "You know, you look so pretty in that red dress," before promptly kissing her on the top of her head and quipping, "Don't tell my wife".

Betty voted for Obama.

Anyway. As you can imagine, having spent the morning watching all the coverage (dancing in the streets of Philadelphia, someone so excited they literally ran under a truck in New York - honest, go to 1:40 of that clip to see) there's a wealth of incredible youtubular celebration on the web today. But Betty Owen is Woman of the Week for restoring my faith in political participation and reminding me of the all-round magnificence of women.

A lesson in geriatric fierceness for us all, I think.

A look at an inspiring family and how breakfast clubs and after school activities have changed their lives

I am Betty Owen's daughter and I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful article about my mom. What started out to be a really cool thing to do for our mother has turned into something absolutely unbelievable! We totally agree with you, mom is and has always been a truly remarkable woman. Just for a bit of a note, mom is also a retired English teacher who, after having been frustrated with her kids coming into the 7th and 8th grades and being unable to read, upon retirement set off on an unbelievable journey. She cashed in her annuity, bought a used motor home(she had NEVER driven anything like that in her life!), and at 65 years of age, took off on a scheduled tour of 24 states over the period of a year investigating reading programs in order to write a book. Her purpose was to empower parents to go to their local school board and demand that they adopt one of these plans into their schools to help their children. She drove through some pretty treacherous conditions during that year, leaving us nailbiting and praying vigourously, but she found some really incredible programs. She then began a book, sent it off to several publishers, and Harcourt, Brace and Jevonovich bought the option for her book. The book never happened though because they wanted her to make it either a trade book for teachers, (NOT the purpose), or a travelogue, which she attempted, but it didn't work for what she was trying to do either, and didn't match her writing style. The dream died, and mom has always felt the effort was a failure. We continue to tell that the legacy of what she DID do was far more impacting than any book would ever be. Well, I just felt like sharing that with you since you seem to have really picked up on her special tenacity and character. Again, thank you and
God Bless all of you in England!!

Hello Gail...I'm thrilled you saw the piece - it's an absolute pleasure writing about women like your mum. Thank you too for telling us more about her - she sounds like a thoroughly inspiring and utterly unstoppable lady. xx
