Luckily I'm not the first girl to ask these questions, (although I'd like to claim originality on the breasts/chainsaw image.) Feminist horror zine Ax Wound aims to "create a dialogue about gender in the horror/slasher/gore genre -- a genre typically thought to reinforce patriarchal values. I want both the zine and the website to provide a safe, stimulating environment for feminists who struggle with their enjoyment of these films." And their review section actually made me want to watch Hard Candy - a film about a paedo getting his comeuppance.

Then there's Pretty-Scary.net - the site "for women in horror, by women in horror", and their mission statement is thought-provoking: "We got sick of watching women get treated like meat on other sites and magazines in order to promote their projects. Now there is a place they can go to be taken seriously, while celebrating the fact that they are hot, funny, and covered in blood. Pretty/Scary is open to horror fans, authors, filmmakers, actresses, webmasters, any woman involved in horror in any way, and even men. It's a site about celebrating the feminine while acknowledging the dreadful power women possess to frighten. We embrace the darkness, the fear and the female of women in horror."

So what do you think? Will you be drawing the curtains and watching something spooky on Friday?
