Dolly Poll: would you use this?
Emine Saner has had a go with a new attack alarm designed to sound like a woman screaming (soon to go on sale in Marks & Spencer). You can watch the results here - and I'll warn you, it's a horrible, horrible noise.
As Emine says, rape alarms do seem to have gone out of fashion. The general feeling seems to be that no one really takes notice of weird, annoying noises in the city, there being so many weird, annoying noises going on all the time anyway. On the other hand, it might be just the thing to throw an attacker off-guard. Jo Walker, spokeswoman for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the personal safety campaign group told Emine: "There is no point using an alarm to attract attention. There may not be anyone around to help you. The main purpose of an alarm is to be like 'aural mace'. If you direct the alarm into an attacker's ear, it can make them slightly nauseous or dizzy and disorientated, giving you a few seconds to get away." She also advises against screaming, because "bystanders have no idea how to react". The best thing to do is yell "CALL THE POLICE".
So, would you use a rape alarm like this?
