This weekend: Skate Almighty
In my day we had 'roller discos'. These were horrendous affairs, exciting and Starlight-Express-like in theory, but in practice just a load of tweeners whizzing round and round and round in their best waistcoats and slouch socks and vomiting lurid milkshakes all over the floor of the youth club. Skating seems to have got a bit more hip and grown-up these last couple of decades, and it's genuinely exciting to hear that this weekend roller disco is BACK!
So they're calling it 'rock and roller skate' nowadays, it would seem. I hope they're proud of themselves. Nokia's 'Skate Almighty' event will take place at London's Southbank today, tomorrow and Sunday and then on to Birmingham's Centenary Square on the 18th, 19th and 20th July. It'll finish up in Manchester's Castlefield Arena on 25th, 26th and 27th July. There will be specially-created spectacular outdoor rinks and DJ sets, and although online registration is closed, there are tickets on the door to be had if you get there early! More details here.
So, are you kids old enough to remember roller discos the first time round? Do they still have them? Share your roller memories, if you like, we'd love to hear them. (Just to get you started, I didn't even have roller boots, I had actual skates. With big plastic red straps that went over my feet. Imagine. The. Shame.)
