My worry about the latest in a long line of disconcertingly lifelike baby dolls is summed up by the following quote: "Fans of the hobby, who call it "reborning", are mostly women and increasingly guarded about discussing it since media reports highlighted their purchase by bereaved parents, prompting some to portray the hobby as macabre." There is something rather macabre going on here, I can see that. But isn't it wonderfully fascinating, too? In a Ron Mueck kind of way? Harrods thinks they're too lifelike for their customers, a problem they obviously don't have with the equally macabre Dodi and Diana statues. One doll crafter sells her creations for between £250 and £1,600. I wouldn't pay that for a real one. So what do you make of them? Dollymix? Or dolly madness?
