Where are all the women online? I need your help!

Katie_thumbnail_profile1.JPGDuring my stint guest editing Dollymix, I've spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly about the internet, trying to find where all the cool kid hangouts for women are on the web. And either I'm losing my touch, or the internet is still coming up very short in that department. Where the hell are all the women online?

I actually started Shiny Shiny, way back in the mists of time, *because* I couldn't find anything I really wanted to read that was just for laydeez. I found most attempts at women's magazines online nauseating, mostly because old media still doesn't understand that writing for people online is a very different thing to writing a print magazine.

And while there were loads of great personal blogs written by women, finding something really compelling to read during my lunch break (obviously I never read websites during work hours *cough*) was next to impossible.

So where are all the women hanging out now? I've got my own list of favourites, which I'm going to do a handy round up especially for you, but if you've got any bright ideas and secret places you go to when you're wandering the web, please drop me an email or leave me a comment.

I'm especially looking for UK women's magazines and websites, forums and social networks or social bookmarking services because the UK still seems to be very overshadowed by the web might of the US. Which is kind of sad in 2008.

Katie is editorial director and co-founder of Shiny Media, which publishes this lovely blog you're reading.

A look at an inspiring family and how breakfast clubs and after school activities have changed their lives

I started reading Shiny Shiny years ago because I liked the idea of a tech blog that didn't just assume women like anything pink. These days I hang out here on Dollymix obviously, as well as on Jezebel, Feministing, Feministe, and I spend an absurd amount of time on Ravelry, the international knitting networking site. Ravelry has a great group "This is What a Feminist Knits Like," where I enjoy the conversation. I used to be into a certain nameless popular newsblog dominated by males, but the misogyny got a little thick. Also, I learned what misogyny was and that it has a name and is not OK.

I *still* haven't set up my Ravelry account. It wasn't working properly when I went on it the other week and I keep forgetting to sort it out. I can't wait to give it a go though - it's definitely on my list of great sites for women.

Funnily enough, I was chatting to someone in a shop today and we randomly ended up talking about Ravelry and how great it was!

Very interested in a difference between the woman oriented content on the web and the rest...
