Test you 'Quirkology' - why Beckhams are more successful than Wickhams

quirkology.jpgHow masculine are you? Apparently your ring finger holds the answer. Are you self-centred? Draw a 'Q' on your forehead and you'll soon found out. Are you called Sophie? If so you're a hot, hot babe, but chances are Elizabeth is probably more successful than you. Ryan is a stud and George is a dud, and Lucy and Jack are the luckiest of all.

Don't believe me? It's time you let a bit of Quirkology into your life, if only for a bit of fun...

Apparently, professor Richard Wiseman "has spent twenty years exploring the backwaters of the human mind and going to places where mainstream scientists fear to tread." The result is Quirkology, a book that looks into all those unanswered questions in life. Does your surname affect the way your life turns out? How many people does it take to start a Mexican wave? Why are Onions seen as stupid?

I've yet to read the book, but if the website is anything to go by, it must be great fun. Wiseman has teamed up with the Edinburgh Science Festival to look into christian names and how they rate in various categories (attractiveness, successfulness etc) and will be doing a talk on Quirkology tonight.

If you can't get to the talk, the website is full of brain fodder to while away the hours. My personal favourite is an old study that looks into the idea that people with surnames that begin with letters at the beginning of the alphabet are more successful than those with letters that appear later on. Apparently, we're used to being first, and that has a knock-on effect on our feeling of self worth.

It may be cobblers, it might have some truth. But it's definitely great fun when you sit on a table with two people whose surnames begin with 'W'.
