The Pregnancy Diet: pregnant women are getting slimmer, perhaps dumber

milla_preggers.jpgWhile women are commended for losing weight and returning to their "skinny jeans" and "bikini body" mere weeks after their "too posh to push" C-sections, now they're being applauded for going on a diet while they're still pregnant. Tara King explains in The Times how she's been watching what she eats during her current second pregnancy, resulting in people "commenting positively on my slimmer bump". Tara says that the "message is loud and clear: the skinny pregnancy is in". The skinny pregnancy relies on a diet that consists of "avoiding high-calorie pickles-and-ice-cream indulgences but also harnessing the less pleasant aspects of pregnancy - morning sickness and fatigue - to good effect".

King goes on to give us the low down that vitamins are essential for your baby, and that having this BMI is healthy and that amount of weight gain is not. We all saw the criticism of Mila Jovovich when she gained weight when pregnant, and King uses this and other celebrity examples as proof that the skinny pregnancy is in, and backs it up with this statement:

"With all the recent focus on nutrition in pregnancy, and the overwhelming pressure to quickly snap back into shape after birth, is it a surprise that women are now starting to diet before they've even given birth?"

Call me crazy, but I don't find this surprising in the least. I'm not surprised women feel pressure to diet when they're pregnant, but I am surprised that they're giving into it. While eating healthy and getting moderate amounts of exercise I agree are definitely important to your babies health, HELLO YOU'RE GROWING A CHILD INSIDE OF YOU.

I was horrified when King explained how one of her friends barely ate any dinner and claimed that she was "so full" when she had only taken a couple bites of chicken stir fry - while she was heavily pregnant. Her friend even went on to say, "I lose loads of weight when pregnant as the baby just takes everything." That baby just takes everything!?! Jesus. Christ.

IB said "you ARE eating for two!!"

Not so much really. In the early stages you're only meant to eat 50 calories more a day than you normally would. And at the end 300 calories more a day, which is hardly anything considering a normal day's allowance is 2000. Thats just an extra snack in my case!

The real problem is putting on too much weight, considering most people are overweight before they even get pregnant. I could go to full term now without putting on a pound and I'd still be in a healthy weight range! I wouldn't suggest that anyone go on a diet on purpose, but your body will always prioritise growing the baby over putting fat on you, so I don't really get that theres a health issue if you're in a healthy weight range for pregnancy.

  • I agree that it is possible to lose actual weight while you're pregnant - I did but that's only because I stopped drinking alcohol. I didn't make any other changes to my diet but sure, some days I ate much less than others - Francois is right, heartburn and a baby pushing on your insides can kinda make you lose your appetite! But the thought of some women being stupid enough to deliberately and calculatingly use pregnancy as some kind of miracle diet cure is maddening.

  • Well, I suppose you don't need to put on loads of weight to have a successful pregnancy, but it seems like this is taking the whole thing to some sort of crazy conclusion.

This is so depressing. Women should just eat whatever they want when they're pregnant! (Within reason of course.)

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Depending on your level of nausea/acid reflux/stomach full of baby it can be hard to eat in pregnancy. Healthy food is lower in calories. You also have added exercise just from carrying the baby and your metabolic rate goes up too. At this point it surprises me that anyone manages to put on weight!
