While women are commended for losing weight and returning to their "skinny jeans" and "bikini body" mere weeks after their "too posh to push" C-sections, now they're being applauded for going on a diet while they're still pregnant. Tara King explains in The Times how she's been watching what she eats during her current second pregnancy, resulting in people "commenting positively on my slimmer bump". Tara says that the "message is loud and clear: the skinny pregnancy is in". The skinny pregnancy relies on a diet that consists of "avoiding high-calorie pickles-and-ice-cream indulgences but also harnessing the less pleasant aspects of pregnancy - morning sickness and fatigue - to good effect".
King goes on to give us the low down that vitamins are essential for your baby, and that having this BMI is healthy and that amount of weight gain is not. We all saw the criticism of Mila Jovovich when she gained weight when pregnant, and King uses this and other celebrity examples as proof that the skinny pregnancy is in, and backs it up with this statement:
"With all the recent focus on nutrition in pregnancy, and the overwhelming pressure to quickly snap back into shape after birth, is it a surprise that women are now starting to diet before they've even given birth?"
Call me crazy, but I don't find this surprising in the least. I'm not surprised women feel pressure to diet when they're pregnant, but I am surprised that they're giving into it. While eating healthy and getting moderate amounts of exercise I agree are definitely important to your babies health, HELLO YOU'RE GROWING A CHILD INSIDE OF YOU.
I was horrified when King explained how one of her friends barely ate any dinner and claimed that she was "so full" when she had only taken a couple bites of chicken stir fry - while she was heavily pregnant. Her friend even went on to say, "I lose loads of weight when pregnant as the baby just takes everything." That baby just takes everything!?! Jesus. Christ.
