Jezebel have a rather interesting response to the Newsweek's article on depression, entitled "Happiness: Enough Already". For anyone that has suffered from depression and tends to be on the creative side, I highly recommend you read this. Basically, Jezebel and Newsweek are discussing depression, and creativity, and the link between. For example, the people who are depressed and not medicated usually are trying to make themselves feel better and actively seeking happiness. Therefore, those types of people ultimately end up being the ones who have better jobs, are more successful, and tend to be more creative due to their constant state of trying to overcome their melancholy.
However, there are doctors that think that many people who mistake common and normal times of sorrow for depression. Personally, it's quite obvious that there are people who are over medicated when all they really needed is a a good chat with a therapist and a jog. However, I don't think it's quite so easy to dismiss those people who do have real depressive disorders as just going through "normal periods of sadness".
