"And another thing!" - NOW president claims women have suffered the Ultimate Betrayal by Ted Kennedy

ted_traitor.jpgCate Sevilla writes...

Apparently women have suffered the ultimate betrayal. Have we had our right to vote retracted? Have all of our girlfriends, boyfriends, lovers, husband and wives cheated on us with our best friend? ("I always KNEW you liked her! PIG!") Is the government outlawing online shopping? NO! NO, my fellow sisters. TED KENNEDY HAS ENDORSED BARACK OBAMA.

What? You're not upset? You're not seething with rage? Huh. That's funny because the New York chapter of the National Organization for women, NOW, seems to think that this is the worst thing one man could ever do to the entire American female population. The president of NOW, Marcia Pappas, wrote a rather livid letter/hissy fit that Melinda Henneberger from Slate's XX Factor blog describes as being so intense that she hadn't seen that many exclamation marks "since I read Donna Hanover's book about how great it is being the ex-Mrs. Rudy Guiliani".

Pappas describes the American women as if we were the exhausted, emotionally beaten wife of Ted, who has turned the other cheek countless times to his horrible decisions. (I believe Pappas referred to this as us "burying our anger".) Pappas says that we "stuck up for him, stood by him, hushed the fact that he was late in his support of Title IX, the ERA, the Family Leave and Medical Act to name a few." And NOW THIS! This is the last straw, Kennedy!

Look. This is the exact sort of thing that just makes me sort of embarrassed about feminism sometimes. Like...JESUS. It's just Ted Kennedy. Plus, that whole freakish emotional reaction to ONE person endorsing Barack Obama is just ridiculous. Plus, what is it that people always criticize feminism and women for? Hmmm. Perhaps emotional reactions? Over sensitivity? Anger issues? Huh.

Why not breathe a little and focus on the fact that The New York Times has endorsed Hillary? Or more importantly, why not be one of the few people to cover the fact that Hillary has been endorsed by the American Nurses Association? Hmmm?

Cate Sevilla is the Editor of Dollymix. She keeps all emotional reactions and hissy fits to herself, and off the internets. Mostly.

...and how about not embarrassing women by suggesting we have to vote with our gender just because? I'm still not sure about Hillary, but I sure as hell wouldn't vote for Condoleeza Rice is she ran...

But in the spirit of her generalisations, Pappas is making me embarrassed to be Greek.
