Commons leader Harriet Harman says UK should outlaw prostitution to end human trafficking

harman.jpgCommons leader Harriet Harman wants to "outlaw" prostitution, as she thinks that outlawing the selling of sex would cut back on human trafficking. Harman told BBC 4 Radio that, "We do need to have a debate and unless you tackle the demand side of human trafficking which is fuelling this trade, we will not be able to protect women from it. That is what they've done in Sweden. My own personal view is that's what we need to do as a next step."

Women's minister Barbara Follett and Home Office minister Vernon Coaker will be visiting Sweden and Amsterdam in January to discuss how they outlawed prostitution. While it would be an incredibly feat to put a stop to human trafficking, Harman insists outlawing prostitution i the only answer, "Can we really stop this trade when we've still got a lawful sex trade going on?"

  • I'm on the record on DollyMix asking for proper legalisation with regulation, so I definitely agree with you Lizzie.

But it's interesting that for once someone is targetting those who visit prostitutes rather than the women themselves. She's not talking about putting prostitutes in jail, she's talking about putting men in jail for buying it, and not just for kerb crawling and pimping. Interesting proposition, even if it does still seem flawed.

Stupid woman, outlawing it would just push it further underground putting those women who are forced into doing it in an even harder position! It's not going to stop and if those people who go to prostitutes for sex don't get it there where are they going to go... well it'll be an awful lot worse than paying for it.

The government should police it more, think of the porn industry, monthy STD checks etc. Making it legal and regulated is the only way to keep the women safe. Individuals should be licenced and that way it can be monitored. The police could then crack down effectively on unlicenced brothells, pimps and prostitutes and stop trafficking.
