If you happened to read the column from "Mikey, 39, is a banker and lives in Islington" in The London Paper last night about why although he's gay he "hates fags", I'm sure it struck a cord with you. For those of you who are too lazy to click the link and read the entire thing, I'll break it down for you. Mickey is gay, however, he hates the stereotypical gay men:
"Unless you wear labels with every bit of your clothing, including socks and especially underwear, you are clearly to be ignored as if you were a leper. It is practically illegal to have any hair on any part of your body. I understand that some people are bothered by hair on a man's back but, really, a bit of hair on a man's chest, forearms or legs is to be expected...you must call everyone 'darling" and kiss everyone on the lips every single time you see them, even if you have never met them before or if you can't stand them...
And, of course, you must bitch about everyone in the room behind their back, and then give the very same people a big smile, a "darling', and a big kiss on the lips as soon as they come your way. Duchesses at a royal court are less phony."
My first thoughts? "Welcome to the world of a woman."
In his first sentence he declares that he thinks "that queer bashers have a point", which I'm sure immediately put people off. And his last sentence says that, "At the party, I found myself sympathising with queer bashers." *cringe* The column has about 33 comments online at the moment, and while there are ones that say things like:
I find it hard believe that a gay man can write that he 'thinks queer bashers have a point', in a newspaper that is distributed throughout London. Have you any idea how many homophobic crimes take place in London?
And...
Mikey doesn't particularly like camp gays, so he condones queerbashers who beat the living crap out of them (and possibly him too)? What sort of a revolting worm of a person you must be.
Personally, I don't think Mickey was by any means condoning hate crimes against gay people. I think it was just a poor and perhaps overly provocative choice of words. But if these angry commenters would have actually read through his post, they would have realized they HEY, maybe he actually has a point.
It's always refreshing to hear people just be honest and say things that everyone else in certain communities is just too afraid to say. Interesting column, Mikey. Well done.
