Women in Music: Electrelane

electrelane.jpgElectrelane are a band who seemingly unpeturbed by scenes, trends or record company whims have been quietly and happily making great music for the last ten years. Four albums later they have gained cult status and succeeded in making beautiful emotive music that isn't constrained by rock clichés. From the epic chorale of 'The Valleys' to out and out rock songs like 'Between The Dog' from their latest album their sound is unquestionably feminine but a million miles away from faceless girl-pop or even the traditional female singer songwriter sound.
Live their insistent basslines and frenetic drumming build up to an amazing crescendo with Verity Susman playing the organ like a woman possessed. A good place to start if you want to get into them is their second album 'The Power Out' is an amalgamation of melodic and moody sounds but 'No Shouts, No Calls' their most recent release is also recommended.
