Monday Question: "Oh! Did it say teaspoon? I thought it was tablespoon..."

cookery.jpgThis week the lovely Dollymixers share with us...

"Are you a good cook? If so, what is your favourite thing to make? If not, what’s the biggest kitchen disaster you’ve ever had?"

Susi Weaser:
I love cooking. Radio on loud, glass of red wine and a cupboard full of ingredients – it’s my perfect evening. My fave is chorizo hash. In fact, anything with chorizo is my favourite.

Amber McNaught:
My mother brought me up to believe that there were too many books to read in the world to waste time slaving over a hot stove, so I can’t cook anything, and hence have had no major disasters to speak off. My mum did manage to make bright green chicken once, though.

Cate Sevilla:
I was never really properly showed how to cook. I make a mean grilled cheese, but thankfully my husband is better in the kitchen than I am, otherwise I'm not sure we'd eat. My biggest kitchen disasters would have been the Christmas brunch I ruined, and the pizza I cooked in the oven with the cardboard tray still attached...

Katherine Hannaford:
I love to cook for other people, but rarely cook when it’s just for myself, it seems like such a waste of time. I adore making cakes and sweet things, but other than that, anything with seafood. My specialty is pan-friend trout with flaked almonds, yum.

Abi Silvester:
I’m not too bad at the odd vegetarian dish, but I lack time and space to do it in (my kitchen probably sits somewhere on the legal boundary between the definitions of ‘cupboard’ and ‘box room’). My boyfriend is a much better cook than me, and is generally in charge when we have cooking sessions; my biggest disaster was probably misreading ‘tamari’ for ‘tamarind’ while making a soup.

Isabelle O'Carroll:
I am a kitchen nazi and will interfere with whatever other people are making. I like making anything, but mostly stews because they are easy, healthy and filling; my favourite would probably be lamb and lentil stew.

Katie Lee:
My boyfriend does all the cooking. We used to share the duties but eventually I realised that I don't actually enjoy it all that much - while he does. Biggest kitchen disaster - I burnt some soup in home economics class and the teacher made me blend it and eat it. I don't think I've ever laughed so much in my life.

Katie Button:
I don't really cook. I can whip up a nice special fried rice if I have to, but thankfully my boyfriend takes care of everything in the kitchen. And thank God too, otherwise it would be microwave meals all the way.

Keris Stainton:
Not so much. I once tried to make shortbread in the microwave. I halved the ingredients but didn't think to halve the cooking time. It came out like a poppadom.

Alex Roumbas:
Yes, I’m competent and inventive. I make a mean spag bol (half a teaspoon of cinnamon, trust me) and Thai Green Curry but have more fun baking and making desserts like my classic Tiramisu with grated chocolate… Mmm. My “disasters” are usually mess-based, exploding cans of chopped tomatoes and so on, but I made a really, really bad chicken casserole once by rushing it – everything disintegrated.

Monday Question: "Oh! Did it say teaspoon? I thought it was tablespoon..." - Comments

  • I make a brilliant take out.

My biggest disaster was baking this brilliant chocolate pudding - the type with a melt in the middle centre. And the centre went splurge and dribbled all the way between the side of the units and the cooker. That was just lovely. Buy integrated appliances people!

  • sneaking in late again...

I love cooking. I don't do it as often as I should but when I do I generally get decent results. I make a pretty mean tomato, bacon and mascarpone pasta, and my chocolate macaroons aren't bad either, but Paella is my signature dish. Everyone who's ever had it loves it (the trick? Cook the onions in a dash of soy sauce and use half fish stock and half chicken stock for the rice). My biggest kitchen disasters usually involve cooking with wine. That's one glass for me, one tablespoon for the sauce...
