You might have thought that while sex itself can be complicated, the reasons for having it are blissfully obvious. As it turns out, there are 237 possible reasons why we're doing the deed; at least, that's what David Buss and Cindy Meston have discovered so far.
What probably won't come as any surprise to anyone is that men and women often have sex for different reasons. What might be more eyebrow-raising is some of the rationale given. My personal favourite was "to feel closer to God", which perplexed and amused me; I was most irked and riled by "because my partner insisted". Although it's probably just the bitter and twisted part of me that instantly assumed more women gave this reason than men. On the contrary, CNET's coverage of the research reports that women 'exceeded men on only three of the 237 reasons: "I wanted to feel feminine"; "I wanted to express my love for the person"; "I realized that I was in love."'. Ah, so in other words, we have sex for the right reasons. Except that "feeling feminine" one. I don't really get it. Why do you have sex? Use the Internet for what it's really meant for - TMI - and let us know.
