Dot helps children recognize and avoid abuse through educational MissDorothy.com
As adults, we've all had our share of day to day dangers and creepiness. However, children are much more vulnerable to this, and unfortunately, don't have the same tools to defend themselves, or even identify that there's a problem. Sharon Doughty was sexually abused as a child, and as an adult began doing work for Northern Ireland Women’s Aid Federation who asked her to help them launch their Helping Hands pack for schoolchildren.
Sharon then created the online world of MissDorothy.com, which is about a nine-year-old girl named Dot. Dot's adventures unfold online, and she serves as a learning tool for children to recognize and avoid danger. Dot covers everything from saying no to drugs, peer pressure, self esteem, but at the heart of the program is learning about the dangers and risks from child abusers.
