Big Question: Are you a "girly" girl?

"Where have all the girly women gone?" asks the author of a post over at Misadventures in Atlanta. Here! We're over here! Or I am, anyway, and I'm just about as "girly" as it gets.

It wasn't always this way for me. When I was a kid, I was a complete tomboy. Always covered in mud, with a pocketful of worms (I wish I was joking about that, but I'm not. Sorry, mum. And sorry to the lady next door into whose hands I placed those worms, thinking I was doing a good deed...) I was never happier than when I was on my bike, hanging out with my friends, most of whom just happened to be boys. I didn't climb trees or play football, and I was very fond of my Pink and Pretty Barbie (although Crystal Barbie was best), but I was only seen in a dress on very special occasions, and if my hair was ever brushed, well, it wasn't me who did it.

Then something changed. I'm still not quite sure what that something was, but by the time I went to high school I was begging to be allowed to wear makeup, rolling up the top of my school skirt to turn it into a mini (oh, the same!) and hanging pictures of Matt Goss on my wall.

These days, I write about shoes for a living, am thinking of building an extension to hold all my clothes, and have my makeup and skincare collection organised in no less than threethree Really Useful Boxes from WH Smith. That's not counting the nail polish, by the way.

So, I guess you could say that I'm a "girly girl". In my defence, I don't wear pink, hate fluffy things and don't go crazy over cats and babies. (Well, cats maybe) Other than that, it's "girly" all the way here.

Wise Diva, though, has been talking recently to a group of guys who tell her that women are becoming "more masculine" - that there's a tendency to forfeit femininity in our continuing quest ffor equality, and that girly women are becoming "all but extinct". Wise Diva doesn't particularly agree with this, and I don't think I do, either, but what do you think? Are you a girly girl, or do you firmly in touch with your masculine side? Do tell...

I'd like to think I have a balance. I wear make-up, take time and care over my long hair, wear nice jewellery and wear skirts most of the time (but that's more because I find trousers that fit difficult to find)

    BUT

I swear like a trooper, drink pints, have a filthy sense of humour, love getting hot and sweaty in boxercise classes and enjoy watching sport.

I find the concept of the 'dainty' dollybird a bit nauseating and the other extreme a bit intimidating. Not criticising anyone who falls into those categories though. It's this spectrum that makes me love being a girl - so much more choice than the boys have. Embrace it I say!
