Apparently Victoria Beckham decided the way to get the American public to like her was to act as vapid as possible. In her god-awful completely-staged-fabrication-of-a-television-show documentary instead of just acting semi-normal and showing a backstage representation of what really happens in her life, the program was actually a medley of staged situations that made her look at best mildly vacuous and at worse anorexic and completely devoid of a brain. Like this clip, for instance...

Just what about cheating on your driving theory test, hiring your (played by an actress) PA based on thinness and ugliness, or pretending relentlessly that you don't understand is entertaining or endearing?

We can all be guilty of pretending to know less than we actually do. But there's limits.

There's something about what I previously believed to be a semi-intelligent woman (she isn't a stranger to the documentary genre, this being her fifth), suddenly acting as if they don't understand what an earthquake is that's very depressing. We all learnt what to do in an earthquake in school, Victoria, even Brian from Big Brother could remember to get underneath the damn table. And underneath all the façade, I believe that you do too.

Oh look, here's Victoria being interviewed by the wonderful little Ant and Dec, acting like she does know what's going on in the world around her, after all. She also demonstrates that she can, in fact, read perfectly well (contrary to her attempt to read a recipe book in the 'documentary'), and even manages to be quite funny.

We've enough dumb female role models, Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson are two too many. Please stop the pretense and stop pretending to be dippy. Contrary to the Paris and Jessica model, this isn't the way forward. If you had anything to do with writing your book or producing your fashion line, I'm sure you know better. Or at least I hope so.

Charlotte Howells is the editor of Kiss and Makeup and Nollie, and she really doesn't understand how aeroplanes stay in the sky, she's not just playing dumb. Honest.
