Keris Stainton on the TV women we love...
If you're in the UK, you may never have seen Gilmore Girls, hidden away as it is on the Hallmark Channel, but having just watched the final episodes online and cried like a baby, I had to make them this week's heroes.
The Gilmore girls are mum Lorelei and daughter Rory who live in the small (fictional) town of Stars Hollow. Both funny, intelligent, confident and quick-witted, they're devoted to each other (Lorelei had Rory at age 17 and raised her alone). But it's not a schmaltzy love-in, it's one of the most sharply-written shows on TV (see, it pains me even to think of it as being "written" - as far as I'm concerned, these are real people).
Yes, Lorelei can be immature, selfish, and irritating (er, who can't?) but she's also loyal, charming and strong. She'd be the kind of friend who'd drive you mad, but do anything for you.
And, yes, Rory is ridiculously perfect. Seriously, everyone loves her, no-one's got a bad word to say for her. But I still cried when she graduated (I was so proud!).
I'm quite genuinely gutted that the show's over. Whatever will I do without them?
Keris co-edits Shiny Media’s fabulous women’s fiction blog, Trashionista and contributes to TV Scoop, The Bag Lady and Bridalwave. She may have to resort to Gilmores fan fiction...
