The Metro reports today that "tens of thousands" of domestic abuse cases in the UK go unreported because people don't realize the violence against them is abuse. Domestic abuse costs social services and the NHS £3billion a year, and a study shows it affects over 350,000 people a year in England and Wales, as well as 45,000 incidents in Scotland. Even worse, a study shows that an estimated 750,000 children a year witness abuse.
The new study that revealed all this information is calling for doctors to have better training so that they can spot people at risk, and for better education programs about domestic abuse in schools. The report concluded that, "Domestic abuse is a challenging crime to tackle as it occurs within relationships, where emotions are highly entwined. For this reason, it is largely under-reported."
