Celebrity smells: Do you really want to smell like Paris Hilton? *shudder*

Zara Rabinowicz can't decide if she wants to be Curious or Lovely

As a writer for Star Trip I'm a bit more enthusiastic about celebrities than most; I like to know what they're doing, where they've been, and who they did. I aspire somewhat to their wardrobes, men and expensive holidays, but I must say I've never been excited over smelling like them. Hopefully it won't ever go as far as "Eau d'sweat", but a recent post lead me to assess just how many scents exist out there. Enchanting by Celine Dion anyone? Or perhaps you wish to be Intimate with the Beckhams? So many choices..

I wonder what the market is for these individual smells. They clearly sell, otherwise they wouldn't still being produced, but even if you are a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker/ Naomi Campbell/ Britney or any of the multitude of celebs who are bringing out odours - does it necessarily follow that you will like them, or even wear them? Truly only a die hard fan could actually wear a smell they didn't like because it somehow "personified" their idol, but considering a lot of stars have very little interactions with production, who is really choosing these smells.

Typically, Paris Hilton's are all sugary and fruity, J.Lo has an earthier muskier feel, and as for the Beckhams...don't even get me started on the hideousness that is the combination of department store musk mixed with bergamot overtones. Are perfume manufacturers trying to embody the "essence" of the celebrity with their scent, or rather the public perception of them? If they were really aiming for the heart of it, Britney's perfume would smell of baby goo, hair dye and a mixture of burgers and chips; while Paris's would be definitely vodka tinged.

I don't think I'll be buying any of the above mentioned - though I do hear a rumour that Gwen Stefani is launching a perfume, and I would love a bit of her retro cool in my life. Maybe I will get a bottle; for research purposes obviously. Not that it will in any way connote anything about my lifestyle, but perhaps it hints at aspirations of one; and the crux of the matter is that in the consumerist world we live in scent is no longer judged just at the fragrance level.
