Lybrel: Pill to stop your monthly period approve by FDA

story.lybrel.wyeth.jpgThe FDA has just approved the pill Lybrel, which will apparently stop women from having their monthly period. The pill is not for everyone, as over half of the women used in the test study dropped out, but the creators of Lybrel claim there is a need for it.

Along with preventing pregnancy, this pill is supposed to be beneficial for women who suffer extreme head aches and cramping when on their period. Now, I suppose that there are some of us who do get horrible cramps, and that this would seem like a good alternative for them. However, Dr. Daniel Shames, a deputy director in the FDA's drugs office, says that despite women taking this pill to stop having their period, "Women who use Lybrel... will most likely have unplanned, breakthrough, unscheduled bleeding or spotting The bleeding can last four to five days and may persist for a year." Um, doesn't that sort of sound like having your period? Sure it may not be as intense, or as regular as your normal period, but what's the damn point, then?

On the same note, I've always been against the idea of taking a pill or a shot that will stop a natural occurrence in my body -especially something like my menstraul cycle. I do understand that there are women who do suffer immensely when Aunt Flow comes to town, but as sociologist Jean Elson says, "For most women, menstruation is a normal life event -- not a medical condition. Why medicate away a normal life event if we're not sure of the long-term effects?"

What do you think? Would be comfortable taking this pill?

I think that stopping them for the sake of stopping them is a bit pointless, but I've been on the normal, built-in-bleeding-break pill for 11 years due to mild polycystic ovary syndrome. Believe me, if you've ever had a period lasting 31 days, you'll medicate and be damned.

Having said that, this new thing looks a bit silly - doesn't even sound like it WORKS.

It actually sounds a lot like the mini pill, which can either stop your periods or make them a lot less frequent, although it doesn't work that way for everyone. I'd definitely take something to stop my periods - "natural" be damned, I have no wish to bleed for a week every month, as well as having to put up with all of the associated sore boobs, stomach cramps, mood swings, etc. Periods may not be an actual illness, but they can do a good job of acting like one, and if men had to put up them, something like this would have been invented years ago.

I'm on the every-three-months version, and it is GORGEOUS. I used to have three functional weeks in a month--for five other days I'd be groaning in bed and literally blinded it hurt so bad. Now my period's a total nonevent; it just happens, and doesn't stop my entire life. I don't think I'd be comfortable stopping it entirely, but I'm just peachy keen where I am now!

I'm getting this as soon as I can. I hate my period (if I'm not on the pill I never stop bleeding), and moon-cycle natural rhythm hippie crap can kiss my ass. I'm looking forward to being functional for ALL of my life- not just 75% of it.

I'm on Depo *because* it stops my periods, and for no other reason. The fact that it's also a contraceptive is a bonus.

The way I see it, I can either enjoy my 20s without having to worry about periods/bleeding/scheduling beach holidays, or I can spend the next 30 years of my life rinsing out knickers under the cold tap, spending a fortune on tampons, and generally being a pain in the arse to friends and family 25% of the time.

Also, back in ye oldenne dayyes, women didn't have periods every month. Before contracpetion came along, the majority of women were either pregnant or breeast-feeding for the majority of their fertile lives, meaning they barely had periods to speak of. Because we're career driven and come from a 1-3 child society, we bleed loads more than our predecessors. This makes me feel better about stopping my periods.

Whilst I'm comfortable taking the 3 weeks then a break pill (I can at least stop overdosing on painkillers that way and function like a normal human being) but the concept of taking something to stop my menstrual cycle completely is a little worrying. The long term effects haven't been fully discovered yet, and to be honest, it doesn't sound as though it even works. I'd much rather take something which gives me my period on a set day rather than the "unplanned" breakthrough bleeding that this does. At least with my own pill, it simply controls the bleeding and forces it into a normal cycle, rather than stopping it completely.

I totally understand if you are like a girl I know who passes out on her period or you really really suffer, but for anyone I think it is unhealthy. Our society has this thing about overmedicated problems that dont require medication like "depression" (just because you are sad doesn't necessarily mean you are depressed) or "ADHD" (Just b/c your kid eats too much sugar doesn't mean he has an attention disorder) and I think any women with some rough cramps and mood swings who chooses to take these pills are weak. I get awful cramps, but I bear it b/c I think that a little pain won't kill you, and if you can't handle it than thats pretty pathetic

Why something that stops me from having normal life and causes extreme pain for 3 days every 4 weeks is called normal??? If I could I would decide to get rid of my period for the rest of my life without any hesitation!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my good lord, I cannot believe the comments made by 'fgmjm' on May 27th. I have just found this page using a search engine, having typed in 'please stop my periods completely.' It's fair enough that the long term effects of this kind of medication haven't yet been forseen, but if something can stop the TWO WEEKS of hell I have every month then I'm all for it with a cherry on top! From ovulation to the end of my very heavy period, I feel like little hormone body snatchers have taken over and turned me into a weepy, irritable, binge-eating idiot who has the unbelievable capacity to pee off my entire network of friends and family. I then spend the two normal weeks trying to clear up the messes I have made. Yes, periods are a fact of life, but so are spots and back pain and headaches; we all medicate ourselves against them from time to time. If the clever little science bods have found a way to alleviate the pain suffered by millions of women on a regular basis then why shouldn't we take advantage?

The 'period' you get when you take your pill is not even a true period. It is breakthrough bleeding. You do not need to have this period and you are already manipulating your cycle by taking the pill [most women do not have 28 day cycles].

You may experience breakthrough bleeding taking the normal pill, therefore the fact it happens when taking this pill is not an indication it does not work. If it did not work it would not have been approved.

PMDD [premenstrual dysmorphic disorder] is not PMT. It affects women for weeks of their cycle and disrupts their daily life to the point that they cannot function. If this can help that then why would someone dispute it.
