In a recent interview with The Guardian, Jessica Hynes (formerly known as Jessica Stevenson) discussed her views on motherhood and feminism. Jessica is best known for writing and staring in Spaced, and her latest appearance on Doctor Who as Nurse Joan Redfern. Hynes, who just recently changed her name, explained how she has been researching the suffrage movement for a potential project and astounded at the differences between the women of the past, and of the present: "I wondered how women - so enthused, so galvanised, so passionate - could have organised one of the most successful political campaigns in British history. Compare that with now when they are obsessed with scented candles. Not to say that all women are like that but it's still depressing that politicised, sophisticated women are few and far between. It's a direct result of rabid consumerism." And as far as things like Botox and plastic surgery are concerned, Hynes says she would "rather be sane and ugly than mad and beautiful".
