Funny Women

Funny women: Liz Smith

Linda Jones continues our look at funny women by shining a light on the career of the nation's favourite Nanna.

Paul O' Grady reckons she should be a dame. I agree with him. The delightful Liz Smith is a national treasure.

From playing a scene-stealing granny in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to breaking all our hearts as the late lamented Nanna in The Royle Family, Liz Smith is the most watchable pensioner I know.

Her autobiography Our Betty describes her life before she won her first professional role at the age of 50. Divorced in 1959, she brought up two children on her own. Go Liz!

Linda Jones once laughed so hard at The Royle Family she went into labour. Her twin girls are now eight years old and she blogs about the fun they all have at You've Got Your Hands Full.
