Politicians seem to hate talking about abortion as much as we hate their decisions on it. However, what they must hate even more is when people find holes and contradictions in their views. You know, like when you have a "pro-life" standpoint, and then someone finds out that your wife has donated money to Planned Parenthood. Ann Romney, the wife of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, apparently donated $150 to Planned Parenthood back in 1994, which would contradict their $15,000 donation to an anti-abortion group this past November. Romney says that it was so long ago, and she couldn't remember the terms of the donation. Mitt Romney claims that while he used to be pro-choice, and promised that he would not intrude on a woman's right to choose, he has since taken a pro-life stand point, saying that,"When we were studying cloning in our state, I said, 'Look, we have gone too far.' It's a brave new world mentality that Roe vs. Wade has given us, and I changed my mind...I was wrong and changed my mind. I won't apologize to anybody for becoming pro-life."
Presidential candidate, former Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, is another politician that likes to pick and chose which parts of sexual education and abortion that he agrees with. He and his ex-wife, Donna Hanover, reportedly donated a total of $900 to Planned Parenthood affiliates during the 1990s. Although he now claims that he "hates" abortion, he says he supports a woman's ability to obtain one. Yet at the same time, he says he would be "okay" if the Supreme Court overruled Roe vs Wade, but then also says he'd be okay with it if they upheld it. (Which makes total, and complete sense, right?) Giuliani also thinks that his donations to Planned Parenthood do no contradict his feelings about abortion, because PP "makes information available" on other options besides abortion, such as adoption.
While he is absolutely right that Planned Parenthood gives information on sexual health, offers testing, gynaecological exams, and birth control methods - how can you give money to an organization that performs a procedure that you "hate"? Do you like to pretend that your money will only fund the aspects of the organization that you agree with? In yet another mind boggling stand point, he has expressed support for a federal ban on late-term abortions that was recently upheld by the Supreme Court, but he has also vowed not to lift a ban on using federal money to pay for abortions for poor women, which was something he advocated as Major.
Will all of you wimpy, confused, politicians make up your damn mind and stop waffling on this issue? You're either for it, or you're against it. You will either allow a woman to legally obtain an abortion, or you will not. As someone who want to run the United States of America, you do not get to change your mind, and pick and choose which aspects of a decision you agree with. Yes or No. Abortion can no longer be dealt with in shades of grey. Get your act together, and stand by a decision. If you can't even make up your mind about this and have a firm answer, why should we vote for you? If you don't have the balls enough to say "yes I support a woman's right to choose" without back-tracking and changing your mind, I sincerely doubt women will be ticking the box next to your name next November.
