The American Cancer Society's new recommendation that women at high risk of breast cancer should receive MRIs along with their mammograms is causing debate in the medical community as most health insurance policies will not cover this. Lisa Schwartz and Steven Woloshin have said in The Washington Post that, "You will soon hear advocates talking about legislation to ensure payment and accusing those who do not want to pay for the test of denying access to lifesaving services simply to save money." However, there is debate over more than money, as because the ACS guidelines do not necessarily prove that MRIs themselves find more cancer, more people are wondering if you can find more cancer if they were to just do more tests. As if cancer wasn't complicated enough on it's own, now we're arguing about overdiagnosis and money. Oi vey.
