New York City has a free condom initiative that is part of the city's effort to reduce the rates of STDs, and unplanned pregnancies, as out of New York's 8.2million residents more than 100,000 have HIV or AIDS. NY has had free condoms available for years, but on February 14 of this year, they unveiled their revamped, new wrapper that reads "NYC Condom". However, even before the condom's new look, they gave away about 1.5million condoms a month. Of course, not everyone loves free condoms floating around all over the city, most predominately of which being the Roman Catholic church. Shocking, I know. They claim the campaign is promoting promiscuity and degrading social standards, along with being "tragic and misguided". The Bloomberg administration responded by saying this wasn't an issue of faith, but a "real world" solution to the city's health crisis.
I think this is fabulous, but I just have to wonder if everyone would agree that this would be such a "sensational" campaign if New York was passing out free female condoms. Or even tampons.
